Profile Layout

I'm messing with the layout of profiles. If anyone has any cool ideas, throw em down. You can check your profile page to see what I've done so far. Also, is there a need for any more categories? Thanks much.

Can't think of anything at the minute, but where do we write our status. Like the little message that appears next to your name in the list box where you send a quicknote? Might sound like a stupid question, but can't find it. Haha.

Post 3 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 01-Sep-2009 6:43:00

when you want to write a status message, go to your quicknote box, type / status, and then the message and press send. let me know if it works

Post 4 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 01-Sep-2009 9:58:04

That works, but how do you clear your status if you don't want one anymore? That's something I've never been able to figure out, and none of the other CL's have been able to tel me, iether.

Post 5 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 01-Sep-2009 10:02:34

type / status clear. it works for me. :)

Post 6 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 01-Sep-2009 11:51:42

I have an idea for something to add: How about the ability to add comments to written profiles (since we have them for the audio ones)? And there can be a radio button option on whether or not you want to allow comments on your profile.

Post 7 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Wednesday, 02-Sep-2009 2:50:16

PrincessLeilani, that's somethinng that's been suggested several times before, and I highly highly like the idea, though I do think people should be able to turn off the ability if they really want. But yes, I've always loved that idea.

Post 8 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 02-Sep-2009 10:47:16

I have also liked this suggestion from the beginning, but none of the CL's have the coding knowledge or power to implement it. JJ, I really like what you've done with the profile lay-outs thus far, could you add this suggestion while you're already doing this other stuff?

Post 9 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Wednesday, 02-Sep-2009 12:15:17

I like the new layout. I also like the suggestion of being able to have your profile rated or reviewed. After all, we can review audio profiles so why not text profiles? Maybe it will inspire people to be more creative and encourage people who don't put anything in their profile to actually do so.

Post 10 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Wednesday, 02-Sep-2009 14:47:19

I love the idea of the comments on written profiles as well. It would be a great idea to get some suggestions about how to improve it. maybe there's something that lots of people want to know that you haven't included. The ability to include written comments would insure that you hear about that sort of thing.

Post 11 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Friday, 04-Sep-2009 10:38:43

Love the new layout thus far. Keep it up. Well, obviously, since I've suggested it in the past, I like the ability to comment on profiles idea. Here's a suggestion forthe categories: What about favorite websites? This can be fun for people who want ideas on where to go for something that interests them that they didn't think of until looking at a person's profile. It would be a similarlayout to the way you input your own personal site. I still think the idea of a friend's list is nice. If anythink it can directly link you to their profiles to see if anything in their profile changed.

Post 12 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Friday, 04-Sep-2009 19:21:28

How about the ability to silect maybe through a series of check boxes which boards we want to see and which we'd like to hide, so we can go to topics with new post for example, and only see the catergories that we wish to?

Post 13 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 04-Sep-2009 20:18:36

I like that last idea as well.

Post 14 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Saturday, 05-Sep-2009 8:17:48

Awesome idea Kev. I really like it.

Post 15 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 3:07:42

Agree with Kev. It's been suggested several times before, and I know it would be a highly utilized feature.

Post 16 by Stevo (The Established Ass) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 6:14:45

That's more of an account setting than a profile feature, but I've liked it from the start. I also like the favourite websites suggestion.

Post 17 by season (the invisible soul) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 6:29:34

the favourite websites suggestions is cool, it allows you to visit websites that your contact visit in regular bases. what about at time fitures, since we have zoners from different place of the planet, it will be interesting to know what time he or she is in.
since we have link to zoner's tweeter page or user name, what about facebook? there're user might want to have both fitures in use

Post 18 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 6:57:15

Yeah, the facebook thing is a good idea. So is the timezone idea.

Post 19 by Doug V (Everyone's favorite CL) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 8:29:52

JIX a spot for pictures on profiles even if i need to be the one to resize and post them i will.

doug

Post 20 by Q (Take my advice, I'm not using it anyhow.) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 11:56:20

I have suggested the Facebook thingie a few weeks ago, but, it was greeted with a deafening silence ...

Post 21 by Click_Clash (No Average Angel) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 12:01:19

Erm... I went to both the account and the profile pages but couldn't find any changes.

Post 22 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 15:47:29

omg. yay. i like the board selecting idea. it's great, no more looking at games. lol.

to the previous poster, there are more headings in the profiles, dividing the profile up a bit more. you'll find it

Post 23 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 18:46:25

I'm not personally in favor of pictures, as it only benefits a very few on the site. unless as was once discussed, you could have one or a small group of people able to give a brief written discription, done without opinion, then it would seem something of a waist of coding and webspace.

Post 24 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 20:39:52

I agree, pictures would be a waste of space for most of us.

Post 25 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 21:23:22

I agree that pictures are a waste for us since as said before, it would only be beneficial to a select few of us.

Post 26 by Stevo (The Established Ass) on Tuesday, 08-Sep-2009 21:43:19

Agree on the picture idea. Many of us couldn't see them and many of us wouldn't even bother putting one up. That said, if the Admins can be bothered writing all that code for a feature that would only be utilised by some, I won't complain. After all it would probably be used more than some things on this site.

The time zone is a good idea too, whether it just shows in the person's profile what time it is for them or it actually shows all the times on the site in local time - though that would require a hell of a lot of coding so we'll probably never see it. If it is the latter, like the categorical board filtering idea it would probably be an account setting rather than a profile feature.

Post 27 by season (the invisible soul) on Wednesday, 09-Sep-2009 0:14:43

i think the picture fiture can be something like optional. if user that is fansy to have their picture seen, they can upload it and douggy can resize if its needed, if not, it can be a disable fountion for other users.

as the time zone goes, agree on donkey, it would have involve in lots of coding, but it is not something imposible. just depends again, on how dedicate our admin is, to make this work, as much as other fitures.

Post 28 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Saturday, 12-Sep-2009 11:14:14

If the Facebook idea was implimented, then users who wanted to see a picture could click on the Facebook link, and there you go. it would be a good way to take care of two ideas in one.

Post 29 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 12-Sep-2009 22:37:51

I also like the favorite websites and friend list ideas. Those ideas sound cool.

Post 30 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Tuesday, 15-Sep-2009 7:27:05

yeah. Maybe it would help to get our true community back.

Post 31 by season (the invisible soul) on Monday, 21-Sep-2009 21:44:10

what about for zoners that is no longer active in this site, maybe a inactive status might be nice on their profile. i don't think it will be hard to write such codes, and 'm pretty sure it can be update authomaticly. someone that have not log in for let say 3, or 6 or 12 months should move to inactive status, that would help other zoners to track who is active and who is not in this site. i know we have the last log in -- when and what time, but i do think the inactive user idea will be simple for people to track down whoever they want.
it can include in the profile search page for active and inactive users

Post 32 by Stevo (The Established Ass) on Tuesday, 22-Sep-2009 5:58:01

That's not such a bad idea, to display a user as inactive if they haven't logged in for, let's say, six months. The code wouldn't be difficult to write either. The only thing is it can't prevent that user from being able to log back in at a later date if they choose, but I guess that's obvious.

But, since the original post in this thread was nearly a month ago now, and nothing has been done to the profiles since then, perhaps I'm waisting my time commenting... hehehe

Post 33 by season (the invisible soul) on Tuesday, 22-Sep-2009 6:28:39

lol well, good point, maybe thats the last time Jay's care to log in? lol.

but isn't it possible to have a generated code, so, whoever that have let say inactive for 6 months will authomaticly appeared as inactive, then, ones they log back in, that gone authomaticly? or, thats beyond programming. i saw some sites have such fitures before...

Post 34 by Stevo (The Established Ass) on Tuesday, 22-Sep-2009 6:54:17

Yeah, it would happen automaticly.

Post 35 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 22-Sep-2009 22:57:58

I love the facebook idea and also the board selecter one a lot.

Post 36 by cumbiambera2005 (i just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 23-Sep-2009 4:23:00

i think these are all good ideas: though the picture one would probably be a waste of space! However, like was said before, anyone that has facebook with pictures on there could just click from the profile if that was done. But yeah, all good ideas! :)
I personally don't know what I'd put in the favorite websites thing, but I guess some people may like that feature too.
But anyway, all sounds great!

Post 37 by Darth Vader (Luke, I am your father.) on Sunday, 18-Oct-2009 10:43:40

yeh. and for the catigories, I was thinking a catigory for your favorite games, or musical instruments?

Post 38 by Senior (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 18-Oct-2009 11:59:53

I don't understand why people are so opposed to pictures. I'm surprised at the lack of pictures on this site. Most sites have pictures on them.

I wouldn't deprive somebody of the option of seeing something just because I couldn't see it myself. I don't know how many people on here can see enough to see pictures, but clearly some people can, so why shouldn't they be able to have pictures on their profiles if they want to? This is a site for all visually impaired people, not just the ones who can't see.

Those who cannot see shouldn't be inconsiderate towards those who can if they don't want those who can see to be incosiderate towards them.

Post 39 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Sunday, 18-Oct-2009 13:14:08

I could agree, but I think if we are to have pictures, they need to be alt tagged, and that would need to be done by someone honest and impartial, to keep it that we all get good information from it.
Basically a sight for the visually impaired should be equally accessible to all if possible.

Post 40 by Senior (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 18-Oct-2009 15:49:03

No, the user should just upload the image, and have to give it a title, or if its a profile picture, just make it appear in the link to the profile like a graphic link.

The CMS my organisation uses requires people to give their images a description, which Jaws then reads out after saying the word graphic.

Post 41 by Stevo (The Established Ass) on Sunday, 18-Oct-2009 19:47:00

Post 38 pointed out that this is a site for "all" visually impaired people, so why would the admins go to what would probably be a lot of coding, use up what would probably be a fair amount of server space, for a feature that would probably not be used by many people on the site? Yeah, it would be nice for some, but for something like that they would want an overwhelming amount of support. I'm not totally against it; I just wouldn't use it myself.

Post 42 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Thursday, 22-Oct-2009 12:50:09

Yeah, and remember that it is the premium memberships that pay for most of these things to be available, and if we start implamenting pictures as well, the price may have to go up a bit, not that that would be a big problem, but we like the price the way it is, right? Just a thought.

Post 43 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Thursday, 22-Oct-2009 16:27:27

well said to the last poster. also, I know I've mentioned this before, but since there's an option to delete audio profiles, can there be one for blogs too for those who have them and no longer wanna keep them up?

Post 44 by Senior (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 23-Oct-2009 15:17:21

If hardly any people are going to use this service, why would the price have to go up?

Other websites have more pictures than there will ever be on this site, but they don't have to charge people more to use them.

How can anybody know how many people would use the pictures options? Some blind people would add pictures even if they cannot see them.

Post 45 by CrystalSapphire (Uzuri uongo ndani) on Friday, 20-Nov-2009 10:49:58

ok bringing this back up lol. i like all the ideas except for the pictures thingy

Post 46 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Friday, 20-Nov-2009 20:28:16

I don't think it really matters much what we've suggested any more, the stuff Jay did implement really hasn't made a difference, and the time could have been spent doing something more significant in terms of what users want. He's been Awol ever since, so bringing it back won't change anything whether we like it or not.

Post 47 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Saturday, 21-Nov-2009 17:00:11

Regarding the pictures thing: If it was implemented, it would probably be for premiums only. And i'd like the ability to disable/hide pictures as personally, they'd offer no benifit to me. But some people may want it and not many people will use it so it probably won't take up too much space. Blind-planet has the ability to upload profile pictures.

Post 48 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Saturday, 21-Nov-2009 17:02:34

Oh yeah, and I think pictures would have to be approved by a CL or admin.

Post 49 by Senior (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 21-Nov-2009 18:08:02

Why? they aren't on other sites. If you want to upload a pic to Myspace or Facebook, you don't need a moderator's approval.

Post 50 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Sunday, 22-Nov-2009 5:23:00

There are some big differences between the zone and myspace/facebook. Myspace/facebook have loads of bandwidth and are mainly for sharing stuff with a small group of friends. The zone, however, doesn't have a lot of bandwidth and is designed to be a community site. But given the maturity of some members here, I think moderation may be required.

Post 51 by Stevo (The Established Ass) on Sunday, 22-Nov-2009 16:20:45

Agree with the professional. For anyone who hasn't worked it out yet, this is not Myspace or Facebook, and since it has neither the same features nor the same purpose as either of those sites, it shouldn't need to be run in the same way as either of those sites. People could upload just about anything in their profile and you surely won't tell me that that's okay. I still don't have much interest in the picture idea on the whole but if it were possible to choose in your account settings whether or not profile pictures are shown, it could probably be managed. Not that it ever would, I'm just saying...
